Trunnion Mounted V-Port Control Ball Valve — Product Technical Data Sheet

Product Name: Trunnion Mounted V-Port Control Ball Valve

  1. Product Overview

The trunnion mounted V-port control ball valve is a quarter-turn rotary control valve featuring a trunnion-supported ball design. The ball is fixed on upper and lower stems with bearing supports, providing excellent stability, low operating torque, and high pressure bearing capacity. The V-notch on the ball offers an inherent flow characteristic close to equal percentage and a rangeability up to 300:1.

This design is ideal for large bore sizes, high differential pressure, high cycle operation, and demanding services including abrasive, viscous, or fibrous media. The trunnion construction eliminates ball deflection under pressure, ensuring long-term sealing integrity and precise control.

  1. Trunnion Mounted Design Features
  • Fixed ball with upper/lower stem support – Ball position is fixed, preventing downstream shift under high pressure.
  • Anti-blowout stem – Stem retained by anti-static bearings.
  • Low operating torque – Bearings reduce friction, allowing smaller actuators.
  • High pressure capability – Suitable for Class 600 to Class 1500 and higher.
  • Double piston effect (DPE) seat – Optional bidirectional sealing at full pressure rating.
  1. Design Standards & Specifications

  1. Advantages of Trunnion Mounted V-Port Valve
  1. Low torque – Ball supported by bearings reduces actuator size and cost.
  2. High pressure capability – No ball deflection; suitable for Class 900 and above.
  3. Bidirectional sealing available – DPE seats provide tight shut-off in both directions.
  4. Suitable for high cycle life – Bearings reduce wear, extending cycle life > 10x compared to floating ball in demanding services.
  5. V-notch self-cleaning – Same shearing action as standard V-port, ideal for fibers and slurries.
  6. Easy automation – ISO 5211 mounting pad, direct coupling to pneumatic/electric actuators.
  1. Typical Applications for Trunnion Mounted V-Port
  • Oil & Gas – Pipeline control, high pressure gas/liquid, crude oil blending
  • Petrochemical – High DP reactor feed, catalyst slurry, heavy oil coking
  • Power – Boiler feedwater bypass, high pressure steam attemperation, coal slurry
  • Mining – High pressure tailings, mineral slurry, abrasive sand
  • Water & Wastewater – Large diameter raw water, desalination, flood control
  1. Actuator Selection for Trunnion Type

Due to lower torque, a smaller actuator can be used compared to floating ball design. However, dynamic torque must be considered at high DP.

Actuator Type

Sizing Note

Pneumatic (rack & pinion or scotch yoke)

Break torque = seat + bearing friction + dynamic torque

Electric (modulating or on-off)

Use safety factor 1.3~1.5 for sticky media
